There is excellent game available at this time of the year and beer is a perfect partner for it.  As with most food & drink matching you aim to complement flavours or go for contrasting to cut through the richness of something like Venison.  As Pete the Brewer says 'food matching is in the tastebuds of the beholder'.

If you want to complement the game I would suggest going for a nice rich porter or an old ale like the Driftwood Spars Brewery's Supreme Champion Winter Ale of Great Britain 'Alfie's Revenge'.  Alfie's has rich fruit cake flavours which is perfect for rich gamey meals.  Or Sundrift which was a collaboration brew with The Rising Sun in Gunnislake, this has gentle chocolate & biscuit malts and berry fruit hops.

If want to a beer with your game contrasting you could try a Belgium Kriek a lambic sour beer with cherry juice added to take the edge off the sourness, I would recommend Boon Kriek.  This tart beer will cut through the richness of the meat.  Lambics are great with Rabbit and make a great sauce for le lapin.  If you want to stay British style try a traditional English IPA which are generally robust, but have sweetness from the alcohol but a dryness from the hops.

At the end of October 19th, 20th & 21st we will be holding our own little beer fest, complete with live music and beer inspired food.  Come and join us to find out more about food & drink matching.
